Testing Your Speed – Getting the Best Results

What very few speed test websites won’t tell you is that they are incredibly inaccurate, and that they themselves can be the reason for receiving a lower result than you expect.

The long and the short of it:

  • Always test using a device with a cabled connection to your router (never use WiFi for speed testing)
  • Disable your antivirus and firewall prior to the test, and close any unnecessary programs
  • Run multiple tests across multiple websites

Placement matters. Where possible, have us install your router in a location closest to where you will use it the most. Try to keep it accessible and away from thick brick walls or large metal surfaces (such as cooker splashbacks etc..)

Device Capabilities. Our 1000Mbps and even the 200Mbps package is faster than some devices can handle. On average, many devices connected using a cabled connection can expect to see around 500Mbps, with some higher-end or newer devices seeing results as high as 800-900Mbps

Keep your devices up to date, this should include installing any updates for your operating system or hardware. Where possible, always obtain any updates from the hardware or software manufacturer’s websites.

Wireless speeds are typically far slower than wired connections due to wireless hardware limitations, the distance a signal has to travel and potential slowdowns along the way, including walls, windows, large pieces of furniture, etc.
